I didn’t have to wake up early and the distance from home to town was short so I walked to town, just to savor the view. First thing I did after I reached town was get shopping, which wasn’t much. Then get to the stage and get a vehicle and as typical as any young guy in his teens would do, gets one that had loud music playing the latest hits. I wasn’t alone, it was a form of segregation back then, and cool matatus were for the “cool” kids. If it wasn’t that kind of segregation, it was in forms and as forms we entered school. Form 1s got in early while the form 4s got in late (role models those were). Upon reaching the school gate, we all had to go through a search team made up of teachers and either the principal or his deputy. That is usually the time it dawned on you that you are back in school, the waking up early, the early morning and night preps, the duties and the classes held in hot afternoons. The next two months really defined you. IN school we were not allowed to have long hair and I really didn’t like getting shaved at the local place, mostly because they had bad services, they usually left me itchy after every shave, it wasn’t really done properly, some parts were a bit asymmetrical, you know, bumpy hair patches.
