I recently had a conversation with a group of intellectuals on leadership. One question popped up in the conversation and it was “Are leaders made or born?” After that conversation I really got to ponder on that for a while. What is leadership really? Is it a role one has to play or is a “calling”? To me, leadership is the act of guiding a person or a group of people by offering sound judgment and having good decision skills, bringing in a level of sanity through management and sound control. With that, is leadership an innate thing or is it learnt. Let us look into both schools of thought.

LEADERS ARE BORN

In this school of thought, it is perceived that leaders are born. They do not learn it in any school, forum or conference. It is in built. Like a part of their DNA. These are the people that show promise when they were just small children. When they meet with their friends, they are the ones that lead them to do mischievous or fun stuff. They are the go-to guy when it comes to making decisions. And when the dust is blowing, they are the ones that stand out to come up with the next steps. They end up being class prefect because they provide such leadership that the teachers rust them with the running of the class with or without minimal supervision. They tend to also end up being the school captains and head boys. Let me just pose a question here, are born leaders highly intellectual? Of course they are, but in the essence that they are proper academics. For one to be a born leader, does it mean that you are an academic? Think about it; provide your thoughts in the comment section below.

LEADERS ARE MADE

This are the type of leaders that aren’t born into leadership but learn it. They make mistakes and learn from them. They endeavor to make themselves better. Some are brought into leadership roles due to circumstances. For example, when an elder sibling is forced to raise their younger siblings due to some unforeseen circumstances, they offer leadership to their younger siblings as they look up to them. The older sibling may not have been born with the leadership gene but they are made leaders by that circumstance. Some have always been in the shadows, just carrying out their work duties then are promoted into leadership roles. They have to pull up their socks and learn about leadership. Sometime you become a leader because you want to bring a change to something. You want to make a difference; change what is considered normal and bring something totally different that you perceive will be better than what was there before. There are so many books and talks on how to be leader, which really tends to show that anybody can be a leader. You just have to be able to offer guidance in whatever field it is you are into.

MY THOUGHTS

Leaders are born and leaders are made. Those born leaders aren’t always going to be perfect but continue to learn through experience. Made leaders also have to learn through experience. Both just want to give the best and be light to those that they lead. In tough situations, we always look upon the leader to provide some sound guidance.
